The gardens at Mount Ephraim date from the early 20th Century and include a Japanese rock garden, a lake, a small wood, an arboretum, a Millennium rose garden and a topiary garden. A recent innovation is a ‘Mizmaze’, a modern interpretation of a medieval labyrinth, which would have been used for exercise and contemplation by monks. Instead of turf mounds, this 21st Century mizmaze, the subject of articles in several gardening magazines, uses grasses and herbaceous perennials, to provide a ‘Catherine Wheel’ of vibrant colour and a haven for bees and other beneficial insects.
