Godinton has been a stately residence since the Middle Ages. Today, the twelve acres of gardens still reflect the influence of the noted 19th Century architect and garden writer, Sir Reginald Blornfeld. The terraced lawns, bordered by the famous yew hedge, have been softened by herbaceous borders and ornamental trees and shrubs. There is still a classically romantic rose garden, a large formal lily pond, an Italian garden and a walled garden with flowers for cutting, fruit, vegetables and large greenhouses. There is also a wild garden with an informal pond, an arboretum and massed spring planting, which is home to an ever-increasing range of wildlife.
Now owned and managed by a trust, Godinton and its gardens are in the course of an extensive programme of restoration.
