Back in 2002, when we were all still wondering just what the internet could do for us, David Andrews put Kent Group on the World Wide Web with our own website. We were one of the first HPS groups to have one. Since then many of us have come to rely on the internet for all sorts of everyday activities and information. Many people have found out about the HPS and Kent Group from the website, which David has kept updated, but now he wishes to pass the baton on to someone else. When I first heard of this I jumped at the chance to accept the baton and carry on running.
What I’m hoping is that it will not only attract new members but that present members will use it as a reference for upcoming events, an archive of past events and information and as a link to other members and the committee. At the moment you can post comments and contact us (the committee) but, eventually, I hope to have a forum so members can communicate with one another. There will also be reminders so that, with one click of the mouse, you will have a list of things needing attention.
The information will be changing all the time so to make sure you’re not missing anything you might like to subscribe to the RSS feed or email updates. Both are free and not as scary as they sound.
The website will not in any way replace the newsletter – we know how much that is appreciated by all our members – but by its very nature it can give up to the minute news and also act as easily accessible storage for all sorts of information on our activities and the plants we like to grow.
As you will have gathered, this is new territory for me and, although I have lots of ideas of how the website might develop, I would really like to hear from members about what you would like to see on it.
This promises to be a great start to our 22nd year.
