Sue set up Iris of Sissinghurst about 12 years ago and since then the nursery has steadily grown in size and reputation. As the name implies, the nursery specialises in tall, intermediate and short bearded irises and particularly those bred in Kent, both modern and historic varieties, many of which are unavailable elsewhere.
At the last two Chelsea Flower Shows Sue has been awarded Gold for growing and staging irises on behalf of the French breeder Cayeux. In 2014 her deep purple and white Iris ‘Domino’ (named after her cat) came second in the RHS Plant of the Year.
The nursery site is currently being redeveloped and she hopes to be able to hold at least one open weekend next year.
You can find more details on her website.
Followed by Seedling Swap
Our annual Seedling Swap has been a fixed event in our calendar for several years now and is eagerly awaited by many. It is a practical and fun way of sharing excess seedlings with other members and we really want to encourage everyone to take part by growing some seeds. If you haven’t participated before, here’s the lowdown on how it works:
- Sow your seeds in the normal way, and when you have pricked out what you need, bring any surplus seedlings to the meeting with a clear label.
- Help yourself to empty plastic cups, select the seedlings you fancy, and using the available knives, forks and spoons, carefully lift seedlings out of their containers, and into their temporary new home and label.
- We will supply plastic cups, spare compost, blank labels and pencils. There will be a small charge of just 10p per forkful to cover costs, with any surplus going to Kent Group funds.
As usual at our lecture meetings there will also be: Plant display – Plant sale – Seed exchange – Book sale – Raffle – Teas
